Coast Guard Days

When Alex graduated from high school, he was unsure what he wanted to do for work. He attended college for two years. He entered the Coast Guard as a mess boy in 1939. His ship carried cargo and ammunition—a dangerous combination—to the Southwest Pacific during World War II. They were away at sea for months at a time. He filled his spare time by reading and writing letters home. He read every book on board. He started a side business writing letters for his fellow seamen to send to their girlfriends. He wrote adventure stories, hoping to have one published in a magazine.4 He mailed off many stories and received many rejection slips. Finally, eight years later, a magazine accepted one of his stories. After transferring to the New York Coast Guard Personnel Separation Center, he was promoted to Editor of the Coast Guard publication The Helmsman, and assigned the title of Journalist, First Class.
